What about new features or enhancements? To be honest, I haven't really noticed any. I believe one of the marketing points was an increase in the number of CPUs and amount of RAM that could be assigned to a virtual machine.

I don't recall if that came with Fusion 4 or Fusion 5 though. Fusion 5 is supposed to support the Retina displays. I don't have one so I can't comment on that aspect. What about the Professional version? I actually upgraded to it during a promotion last year but I haven't used anything from the Professional portion yet.

It is the exact same software, the additional features are simply unlocked when you enter the license code for Professional. Look at VMWare's site for a comparison of what else is offered in the Professional version to see if it is worth it to you. So, should you upgrade to Fusion 5?

Fusion 4 had major usability issues that Fusion 5 resolves. In my opinion, if you are running Fusion 4 you should definitely upgrade. It isn't so clear if you are still running Fusion 3 though. Fusion 3 was solid. Fusion 5 has improved performance and some new features over Fusion 3. You need to determine if those things are worth it to you. If you do decide that you want to upgrade then Fusion 5 would be a good choice skip Fusion 4.

Not ready for prime time. Like a lot of people, I will upgrade whenever an upgrade is available. When Fusion 5 came out, I figured, why not?

They each have their own pros and cons, though I preferred Fusion since it was more stable - until now. I am dead in the water. I can click on the app and count to about 7 or 8 and BOOM - my entire system will crash.

Now I'm using a relatively new Mac Pro with plenty of disk space and memory, nice video card etc. Nothing special. I have had a couple of marathon sessions with their tech support. The technician was very friendly. They always have been. They used TeamView to log into my system to see for themselves the issue encountered. Still after removing all traces of Fusion, reinstalling, sending them crash logs, it still crashes my system for some unknown reason. The issue was sent to their developers - maybe.

VMWare has stopped responded to my emails. I am very polite, but I seem to no longer exist to them. Still, I keep trying once a week.

I purchased Parallels 8 and upgraded some of my virtual machines from Fusion to Parallels, which is quite handy. The exception is Windows Server It gets half through a conversion and then it rudely quits.

A new install of server will work though. Parallels seems to work pretty well for the most part, but if left running a while, it tends to lock, up requiring a force quit and often a system reboot. Another option is VirtualBox. It seems to run ok though I have not tested it extensively. Crossover is really nice since it does not require a copy of windows.

It runs windows applications natively on the Mac, though not all windows applications will work. Still, Steam works so all my windows games work without a hitch. Anyway, which VM should you use? It's a personal preference. I have no doubt that whatever issues that Parallels and Fusion have, they will work them out. VirtualBox is free, and CrossOver does not need an operating system. If you have the room on your system, you can try one or try them all and see what works best for you.

I'm still dead in the water with Fusion 5. I do receive polite weekly updates that they "are still working with our engineering team in getting a solution", but with no end in sight as to when or even if, they can fix the problem. I have asked VMWare for a credit to purchase Parallels 8. It's a shame that it comes down to this, but, oh well. Four months total. Fusion finally found the problem. In all fairness, is turned out to be a disk problem, though no other applications had any problem.

After recreating took four days of rebuilding my RAID drive. It now works. On one hand it took them four months of sending crash logs to find it, on the other hand, it was not their problem but a disk problem. It's well-integrated into the Mac environment, good-looking, streamlined, and polished, but not radically different in any way. I'm still running my original Windows XP Image, which I converted using the built-in "Import" functionality - a nice touch!

I'll even be running heavy compilation tasks on my Mac, while "re-flashing" sending firmware to my phone from the Windows VM simultaneously, with no noticable performance or stability impact on either side. Compared to the older Parallels 4, VMWare Fusion 5 seems to use more resources, and I definitely notice that some Windows applications are less responsive than with Parallels 4.

And apparently that is also the case when compared with newer Parallells version on newer hardware - Parallells seems to get consistently better scores in benchmarking tests. Parallells runs only on the Mac. I have not yet tried running non-Windows guest OSes eg. The installation of the upgrade went smoothly within the Mountain Lion OS, and the software quickly worked with my previous Windows installation.

The best feature is an improved integration within the Finder. I frequently use Windows to decrypt government-supplied CD's, and since the US Government doesn't know how to encrypt files using encryption that can be handled by Macs, I'm forced into using Windows. But I then have to read the decrypted files using a Mac go figure so my process is to decrypt the files, then drag them from Windows and into the Mac finder.

In Fusion 4, the dragging process often hit a wall when I would try to drag the file out of the Windows environment, with a significant delay while Fusion figured out what I wanted to accomplish. That delay is history, thankfully, and files can now be dragged easily back and forth between the two environments. I've also noticed an improvement in memory management. Fusion 4 would take over a good deal of RAM, then fail to release it upon quitting.

Fusion 5 appears to be better about sharing so I no longer have to restart after running Fusion to regain memory space. The other quickly apparent feature is an improvement in start-up time from Fusion 4. Documentation still appears to be less than what I'd expect, with an overall complexity level that exceeds what most users need or want while not always answering the simple questions.

There are several advantages for getting virtualization software like VMware Fusion 5. You can test updates, different operating systems, or run applications that are not compatible on your Mac in a virtual operating system without having to restart your computer like you would using Apple's Bootcamp. Saving snapshot of a clean instance of your VM is easy and rolling back to a snapshot takes only a few minutes if you ever need to rollback because of a virus or system corruption.

Point being, if you're like me and need to have several applications open while running Fusion 5, I would suggest you purchase more RAM so that your computer doesn't become sluggish. Overall Fusion 5 is a great product an I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to run Windows or any other operating system on their Mac.

Easy to install. I was concerned about my iMac slowing down -- it did NOT! Fusion 5 is like another Mac program running. In fact, I usually allow it to run all the time.

Use Windows 7 Professional. No problem. It installed without a hitch. I cannot give this program enough credit. I am very glad I chose it over alternative programs. But still it could use improvement. Its neccessary for me but expensive and they charge for it every versions or two so it doesn't get 5 stars from me. I was a Windows user for many years and decided to switch. There is not MAC version.
